One of my favourite things about homeschooling is that, unlike the name suggests, it doesn’t happen strictly in the home. A lot of our learning happens outside and in a very hands on way. Today we took a trip to a strawberry farm to pick our own delicious strawberries! We talk a lot about the seasons and the girls have noticed that we can only get certain types of fruit at different times of the year. They love strawberries and have been waiting for them to come back in season. They grabbed their containers, ready to fill them as high as they could.

They loved finding the biggest and juiciest strawberries, and luckily we were also joined by their Nan and Uncle who were enlisted to carry around their containers for them.

It was such a beautiful day and very hot out in the sun, even though it’s winter.

My 5 year old is very interested in bees at the moment. She has been watching lots of documentaries and yesterday made a beehive out of craft materials to take for ‘show and tell’ at our homeschool co-op. She was excited to see bees buzzing around the strawberry plants and we talked about their job in pollinating the flowers.

Finally our containers were getting full!

We weren’t allowed to eat the strawberries while picking, and they were very hard to resist! We headed back to have some strawberry ice-cream.

Yep, ice-cream in winter. It was definitely hot enough for it. We are so lucky to live here.

When we got home our littlest family member even got her first taste of strawberry.

Such a fun and simple day filled with natural learning. I think we’ll definitely be back for another visit in the future!
