Well, what a big week it’s been! It seems like there has been so much going on here, and I managed to catch quite a bit of it on camera too. I hope you enjoy this little peek into what we’ve been learning…

There has been a lot of learning about literacy this week. As I mentioned over on my facebook page, we have been looking at the wordless book ‘Journey‘ by Aaron Becker. It is such a beautiful book and we have been talking about how the illustrations in a book can tell the story all on their own if you look closely. Every time we read it we notice more and more.

We decided to do some artwork inspired by the book. I asked the girls if they had a magic crayon like the girl in the book, what colour would it be? They both chose an oil pastel and drew a door in the corner of their page. Then I asked them what kind of place their door led too. Miss 3 painted a ‘rainbow land’.

Miss 5 painted a ‘field of flowers in lines in the order of the rainbow’.

Miss 5 also began work on her own wordless book. I’m not sure what’s inside. I’m not allowed to look until it’s finished.

Work continued on the nature journal, now adding the names of all the bugs.

And there was more writing practice in the form of letters to family.

The girls have become interested in Reading Eggs again and completed lots of levels this week. Miss 5 realised that she is almost at the end of all the levels and so is motivated to get them finished.

There was more storytelling in the form of a puppet show! They wrote out tickets, set up chairs with seat numbers, and rehearsed their show together 3 times. I even had to pay 5 cents a ticket! It was a very cute show though.

We made a trip back to the library to pick up some books we had on hold about fairies, maps, electricity, art, and of course some more story books.

Maths this week started with some mapping. I’ve noticed an interest in maps for a while now, and so I set out a big piece of paper with some oil pastels and drew ‘our house’ in the corner. Then I invited them to see if they could draw a map of our neighbourhood.

They got straight to work and really enjoyed this. There was lots of cooperation and discussion about where things should go.

We stuck the finished map up on the wall in the play room and next week we will take a walk around our neighbourhood and make another map along the way. We can then compare the two.

There was another visit from the tooth fairy this week, who conveniently left a range of different coins for Miss 5 to add up.

A little invitation to order numbers 1-100. I thought it was interesting how she started with the tens.

Miss 5 was keen for some more maths and so I gave her some word problems to work out with her materials, e.g. ‘if the librarian said we could keep our library books for 4 weeks, how many days is that?’ She was able to work out the answers using her cuisenaire rods and abacus.

This week at co-op we made grass heads, and also ziploc bags with beans to watch sprout. Actually they don’t really look like grass heads do they? Which reminds me, we still have to stick on the eyes!

We also finally cut down our sunflowers! The girls were so amazed by these and how we have grown something so big from a tiny seed. We will let them dry out for a little while before we get the seeds out.

Sensory play this week was gak!

Looks pretty gross to me, but they love it. Although, don’t try and put glitter in it, as you can see, it doesn’t stay there.
