The week that was…Natural learning

NL2

Another week full of lovely natural learning has passed! Stop by Memoirs of a Childhood and An Everyday Story to see what they’ve been up to this week too. And I’d love to know what kept you busy this week!

The week that was...Natural learning | Happiness is here

This week we went to a strawberry farm with our homeschool co-op! It must have been our yummiest excursion yet.

There was more building with the rainbow blocks outside, creating beautiful coloured shadows.

More little worlds discovered.

In fact there was a lot of building with all of the blocks.

Miss 5 came up with this plan. She wanted to make a miniature model of a sand pit with clay, and then fill it with plaster of paris.

She got to work straight away.

Pouring in the plaster.

Fixing up a leak.

She cut out some things to stick in, I think they were a bucket and spade, etc. She plans to paint the plaster yellow.

The girls Aunty commissioned some paintings. She wanted 3 with cool colours, and 3 with warm colours.

The littlest one learnt to dig! And also discovered what dirt tastes like, ha!

Miss 5 climbed to the top of this for the first time and was so proud of herself.

We encountered a swooping magpie on our way to ballet this week. Miss 3 has been very interested in magpies and why they swoop people at this time of year ever since.  Here she is studying some outside our window.

They were both interested in Reading Eggs again this week, after not asking to use it for a while. I loved this little moment, Miss 5 teaching Miss 3 what was happening on her ‘map’.

Peas and beans were picked from the garden and tasted.

A little maths provocation.

The week that was...Natural learning | Happiness is here

Just ‘playing’ with the materials with no direction from me I noticed she was ordering numbers, connecting numerals and quantities, subitising, sorting and classifying, making patterns, and comparing length and circumference and ordering accordingly. How amazing is play based learning?

More painting this week.

Miss 5: ‘It’s a house and fireworks in the sky, isn’t it lovely? It’s just like I imagined it’.

Looking at microbes on the iPad. The girls have been really interested in microbes since we got this great book.

A present from the girls Aunty inspired some more play with literacy. These are called ‘Really Big Words‘ and are a great size for little hands and early readers.

While planting some more sunflowers in the garden we found worms!

What a fun week! I love hearing what you’ve been up to, you can share with me by leaving a comment below or on facebook. I hope you’ve had a lovely weekend!

Such beautiful photos! I love the blocks with the holes and sticks, I think hubby might have a project to make! 🙂

Beautiful.

We have that microbes book on order too so I’m really looking forward to getting it. Those magnet words look fabulous too. I really love your maths provocation and Miss 5’s gorgeous painting (and sandpit). Just a really lovely week 🙂

Oh what a lovely week! Love the mini sandpit. And them looking at reading eggs together is so precious 🙂

As much as I am very different than you, I love your parenting methods! I find that I’m very inconsistent-sometimes easy-going, sometimes very type-A. I’m still trying to balance it all. You remind me to me more easy-going, more often! I especially love that pic of your daughter in the dirt…priceless! I have a similar one of my daughter, except she is in the sand 😉

I’ve been thinking about home schooling for a while now, but the idea is so daunting!! I’ve just had my fourth baby, my other children are 7, 6 and 3. They have all sorts of issues at school and I often think we’d all be so much happier if we learned at home! I admire what you’re doing and hope that I can build up the courage to do the same!

Where did you get the little wooden people in your little worlds photo? They are so cute for block play.
