But there is also a place for some formal learning. There are many things that are so much easier to learn and do as an adult because the building blocks were placed as a child. We have a first hand experience as some people very close to us never learned issues relating to do what you need to not just what you want to, they are homeless or jobless and often fighting to keep a job and manage finances. I remember picking up music at the age of 11 and didn’t stick with it, now no matter how hard I try I can’t figure it out again. So, take everything with a grain of salt and do what works for you. Some people just can’t pick up things that quickly as an adult.

I am homeschooling my girls for that reason. That said, I was homeschooled as a child and I know a few of the children who received little formal instruction. They have grown into adults who never went to college, have a hard time finding employment, and suffer from low self esteem. So, yes…more play…but with BALANCE.

Hi Helen. It depends what they want to do. If they are want to go to university I’m sure they’ll be motivated to achieve whatever qualifications they need.

I am a parent caught in a world of school I’m not so sure about it. I work in a Forest School and believe very strongly that children need to play a lot longer than the British education system allows them to.
