Earlier this week Miss 14 spent one of her days wi Earlier this week Miss 14 spent one of her days with the RSPCA learning about all the work they do and how they care for the animals. She loved it.

The program went from 9am-3pm, the length of a school day. It had me pondering how different things would be if, for the last 10 years, she had been gone this long for 5 days out of every week. For most, this is normal. For me, it felt so strange to not know what she was up to, what she was learning about, etc.

It's completely normal and great for her to do these things on her own at her age, of course! It just had me imagining if this was our normal for all of her education. It is now so strange to think of not being a part of it, not witnessing it, not sharing in her learning and a lot of her day.

We seem to have come to believe that parents don't play a major role in their children's education. It feels totally normal to send them off to 'experts' for that. You might even feel unsure about taking up this role, or be criticised by others for considering it. I felt that way in the beginning. Now? Nothing seems more normal than spending our days together, learning together, and being responsible for their education. School is an option if this is not possible (or wanted), but just because it's common does not make it the only way, or the best way, or the 'normal' way. Nothing feels more right to me than spending our days together.
