Do your children keep journals? Mine love journal time. We usually sit down to do it at the end of each day if we’re at home, and if we remember! Mostly they will draw or write about something that happened that day. Other times my 5 year old likes me to write something for her at the top of the page for her to base her picture on…
She has a whole book filled with these now. I recently decided to make some cards with some more prompts on them for her so she could pick one at random whenever she liked.
I placed them in a basket on the writing table for both of them to find.
That afternoon they sat down with their journals and picked a card each.
They liked to make a game of it, closing their eyes and picking a card at random.
There was both reading and writing practice. Miss 5 read her own card by herself, and then decided to copy the words into her journal at the top of the page, like I had done for her previously.
Miss 3 followed her lead and also began copying the letters off her card. Here is a W and an I.
I love how they’re always talking with each other as they work and encouraging one another. So beautiful to see!
They both really enjoy journaling so I think these cards might get quite a lot of use. We might also use them as conversation starters, or story starters when they are older. And I’ve decided to share them with anyone else who thinks they might be useful too! There are 9 pages of them, just click on the links below to download.
I hope your children enjoy them, and I’d love for you to drop back in and tell me how they went if you do use them!
