"But what if my child isn't interested in anything
"But what if my child isn't interested in anything?" I get asked questions like this all the time, so I thought I'd spend a bit of time answering some of the practical questions that come up when you're actually trying to make unschooling work in real life. I think this is the biggest one! If your child doesn't seem interested in anything, don't respond by trying harder to make them find an interest. Maybe that sounds counterproductive lol, but pressure isn't the answer. Instead, focus on creating a rich and interesting life around them, and even get on with pursuing your own interests. A few things you could try this week: • Visit the library and pick out new books on interesting topics. There are tons of interesting books out there! • Pull out materials you haven't used for a while: clay, paints, a microscope, tools, old magazines, whatever you already have. • Go somewhere you don't normally go. Try a gallery, market, nature reserve, op shop, museum, etc. • Watch a documentary about something none of you know much about. • Start something yourself and invite them to join you. Want inspired learners? Then you've got to model it! What do you want to learn about? What hobbies do you have? Do them in front of your kids. • Share the things you're interested in too. Tell them about something fascinating you read, show them something you found, wonder aloud about things. • Look at what's happening locally and choose something to attend together. And then don't immediately ask, "Soooo... did you find an interest?" LOL! Forget about the goal of finding an interest and focus on living an interesting life. Interests are the products of that.
