There are two ways you can use your power: to dominate or to serve.
You can push people down, or you can pull them up.

So much of what is considered normal in raising and educating children relies on the former. On control, force, and fear. Adults are in charge, and children do what they're told. The person with more power gets more say, and that's just the way things are.

But we don't have to replicate the culture around us in our own families. Just because it's 'normal' doesn't mean it's good, or right. We can choose differently.

What does it look like to use our power as adults to care for children? To empower them rather than control them? It means we use our power to make sure their voice is heard, advocate for them, help them access information they can't on their own, open doors that are easier for adults, protect their dignity, and lift them up.

More power doesn't have to mean more control. It can mean a greater capacity to empower and serve others.
