I can be respectful, cooperative, and committed to
I can be respectful, cooperative, and committed to my children's autonomy, and still have far more power than they do. I have the money, the car, adult status, more experience, and control over a lot of the things they need to participate fully in the world. That power doesn't disappear just because I don't intend to be controlling, so I think it's worth noticing how we use it. Can my children disagree with me? Can they say no? Do their opinions actually change what happens? Do I ever use my money, transport, or access as leverage? Am I willing to change my mind when they tell me something isn't working for them? There will always be ways I have more power than my children, so it's something to be constantly mindful of at every stage because control so easily slips back in because of it. It's about how we use our power to empower THEM. How we share it with them and how intentionally we think about our choices, rather than automatically falling back on the ways our culture teaches us to treat children. Having more power shouldn't give me more entitlement to control. It should give me more responsibility for how carefully I use it. #endchildism #consciousparenting #unconditionalparenting #unschooling
