Simple Addition Game

sponsSimple Addition Game

Today I wanted to share about this simple addition game Miss 4 has been playing. She’s always enjoyed numbers and lately has been asking me for her own ‘sums’ like her big sister often does. Sometimes I am busy with her baby sister and unable to immediately stop and write some for her so I wanted to create a little activity where she could generate her own problems whenever the mood arose! The photo above is what I came up with. There are coloured discs in the white bag that represent numbers, a ‘code’ to work out what the numbers are, and some Spielgaben dots for working out the answer. I was simply going to write the numbers onto the coloured discs at first but decided to make it a little more interesting and challenging for her. Also, Miss 4 is sounding out words already but you could always just use a coloured pen to write the numbers for those who aren’t reading yet.

All she needs to do now is pick out two coloured discs at random, and then work out which number they represent. Some of the colour names were a little tricky for her to read but she can easily work them out by looking at what sound they start with until she is able to recognise them.

She then used the dots to count out each number.

Finally, she counted all the dots together to get her answer!

Here’s a little video of her completing another one…

Hope you enjoyed a little peek into what we’ve been learning. What are you up to?

I love this invitation! And few children would be able to resist the mystery of what’s coming out of the bag next.
