They are scared to plan, and stop planning altoget
They are scared to plan, and stop planning altogether.

It makes total sense and I've been there too. After spending our own childhood navigating rigid schedules, expectations, curriculum, adult-directed learning, and even punishment if we didn't comply, we want something different for our own kids. So when we discover unschooling, we swing to the opposite extreme.

No planning, no adult input, just full-on freedom! It sounds good right?

But planning isn't the problem. Control is.

Planning can be a way of noticing interests, capturing ideas, dreaming about projects, gathering resources, and making space for what matters. It's about intention. Intentionally pursuing your interests. And that's definitely something I'm keen to encourage!

Not every unschooling family plans, and that's okay, but planning isn't the opposite of unschooling. Control is.

Just because they do something in school, doesn't mean they own it. Outside of school we can plan in ways that support freedom, are intentional and respectful, allow for spontaneity and random adventures, and add positively to our lives instead of take away from it.

I totally encourage you to do some planning WITH your kids. It's something we find vital in our unschooling and really makes a difference to how our days and weeks flow.

Need some more guidance about how planning fits into an unschooling home?

I can't fit all my thoughts into one post, but if you comment PLAN I'll send you my free Planning Without Pressure email series, where I go into this in much more detail ♥
