I’ve posted some photos of us using our new outdoor art table over on my Instagram and received a few questions about it so I thought I’d share some more photos with you today.

I’ve been wanting an outdoor table specifically for the kids to do art at for ages, so we decided to make one! It was so easy and I love it. Here’s what we did…

We had some pallets sitting in the garage that we had no use for so we decided these would become our table.  Four pallets stacked on top of each other was just the right height for the kids to stand at. We put a few nails in to hold them firmly in place.

For the top we just used a piece of plywood, a little bigger than the size of the pallets. Although we painted the top with some varnish to protect it, we also decided we wanted to make it removable so we could easily move it undercover if we had a lot of rain without having to move the whole thing. It also makes cleaning much easier. If there’s a big painty mess I can take the whole top off and hose it down. And as the girls grow we can even add another pallet if we need a higher table.

Underneath the top we added some pieces of wood to fit into the spaces between the wood on the top pallet. This means the top is secure and doesn’t slide around when in use, and all I have to do is lift it off to clean.

And that’s it! It took no time at all and it’s just perfect for what we need. You could even make shelves to store art supplies underneath which we might do in the future but I was too impatient to start using it!

It is the perfect height for the girls to stand at, and big enough for them both to have plenty of room to work. I wanted them to be able to stand and work so that they could move around the table and use a bigger space instead of being restricted to a chair like they might be indoors. It’s also big enough and high enough that I can place the art materials in the middle of the table and a certain little 1 year old can’t reach them if we are doing something I’d rather her not get her hands on.

There is much more freedom to make mess when doing art outside!

And that’s all there was to it. It’s only been a couple of weeks but it has been used every day we are home. This is going to be one well loved table.
