On the Bookshelf: What We’re Reading
“There are perhaps no days of our childhood we lived so fully as those we spent with a favorite book” –Marcel Proust
It’s cold here now and there’s nothing better than snuggling up with a good book! We’ve been enjoying some lovely children’s books lately and I’m finally getting around to sharing them with you. You can click on the links under each title to read more.
Wild by Emily Hughes
Book Depository | Amazon
This is a gorgeously illustrated book that all of the girls have been enjoying a lot lately! It is the story of a girl who was raised by animals in the wild, where she was happy and free, until one day some humans found her.
They try to tame her and soon find out that “you cannot tame something so happily wild”. We’ve had some great discussions about the book and what the story is telling us. The girls think the moral of the story is that everyone is different and you don’t need to try and be like everyone else, as long as you’re happy. They particularly love the pictures and it inspired Miss 7 to make a book of her own, set in Africa instead.
Amazing Babes by Eliza Sarlos
Book Depository | Amazon
I love this book, especially for girls!
Each page has a portrait and short sentence about an influential and inspiring woman.
At the back there’s a list of everyone included in the book with some more information about them. The girls have been introduced to some women from all over the world they hadn’t heard about before. This book also inspired some artwork!
My Place by Nadia Wheatley
Book Depository | Amazon
This is a fabulous book and I think a must have for Australian kids! My place details the history of a piece of land in Sydney, Australia from 1788 to 1988 through the stories of the children who have lived there.
At the beginning of the book there’s a timeline so that you can see how the stories fit together.
Each page tells the story of the family who lived there at that time, what life in Australia was like, and contains a map of the land so you can see how it changes. A great book for introducing Australian history to kids!
Little Big Tree by Tim Brown
Booktopia
Little Big Tree is a beautiful story with a gorgeous message about being yourself, no matter what everyone else is doing.
Little tree is supposed to grow tall and straight like all the other trees.
Instead, he decides to ‘grow his own way’, ending up a beautiful, unique, happy tree. Such a lovely message, especially for some kids whose life is a bit ‘different’ to others!

Thanks for sharing what you are reading! My Place looks like a beautiful book. We are just finishing up a study on Australia but we keep finding new resources we can’t pass up, so it’s hard to quit. Australia has been really interesting to us!
Oh it’s just awesome! A perfect addition for you then.
Thanks Sara, for the awesome book reviews!!! I think I will need to buy nearly every single one of those books now!!! Ahhhh!!!
Sorryyyyyyy!!!! LOL
It seems we can never have enough books. Many of Julia Donaldson’s have become favourites especially ‘The Gruffalo’, ‘Room on the Broom’ and ‘The Snail and the Whale’, the last of which we just saw as a stage production. My four year old is also obsessed with the Treehouse series by Andy Griffiths, which she reads with Daddy at bedtime. Think that ‘Wild’ book will be joining our collection!
I’ve got Wild coming by post already (her big eyes and the message just seemed to insist I buy it for my 6 m.o.), and I think that I will be grabbing a few others from this post too! Thanks Sara!
We have ordered Wild.. thank you for the recommendations xx
