The week that was… Natural learning
Well this week has been busy, busy, busy! After so long not seeing friends (with holidays and sickness) we certainly made up for it this week!
We started the week by having friends over to play. The little group of 10 kids that we have always have a great time together. All of them were drawn to the Magna-Tiles. I know I keep going on about them but we are in love. They are so much better than I even imagined and have inspired so much creativity and learning.
There was lots of working together and showing others how they had built things.
Rachel even bought her baby chicks for the kids to look at!
They were all very interested.
The girls have been using these animal x-ray cards on the light table, which they have found very interesting. Miss 3 liked discovering that the animals had a spine, the same as us, and that there are no bones in a camel’s hump.
This week the girls cooked quiche and banana bread.
A while ago we inherited a large box of craft supplies. In it were some bags of white powder labeled ‘soap’, I assume for soap making. I decided to tip one into the water table and let the girls use whisks to make bubbles. Well, it turned into this thick goopy slimy stuff that was way better than bubbles! We added some liquid watercolours to it.
The girls played with it for ages, scooping it and setting up shops to sell ‘blueberry soup’.
We went to a ‘NOT back to school’ pool party! The girls had a great time and I supervised them all without anyone drowning. Win!
At co-op this week we had a sensory play day. Rachel made this disgusting looking slime out of soap flakes and water. Ok, so turns out my soap idea is totally not original!
We also had goop, and clear and black water beads.
Even our little 1 year old had a turn. Watching her face as she explored something new was precious.
The addition of these lovely felt balls from CleverPatch to the loose parts inspired some new imaginative play with the fairy house.
Miss 5 has been busy working on plans for a fairy sculpture made from clay, and set up this by herself. She has the clay mat, tools, clay, and her book with plan on a stand to look at. She also set up some clay and tools so her sister could make something too.
It’s always interesting to see the different ways they use the same materials. Miss 5 concentrated on making very intricate little pieces for her sculpture.
While Miss 3 was more into squishing the clay with her hands, rolling it, adding water, and experimenting with how it felt.
What a fun week! I expect next week will be much the same as we have lots of plans to catch up with friends and family again!

Looks like a wonderful, messy, happy week. 🙂
Corn flour makes amazing goop too. It’s able to be rolled into balls but turns liquid again when you stop pressing on it. Heaps of fun! Just be careful not to add too much water. Or food colouring!
Yes! We use that at home! It is the weirdest thing.
